Internet Business Basic Guideline

There are several basic steps for starting a business online.  The steps below will give you an idea of what needs to be done when starting your home business.  You will also find reference to a few very helpful resources that will make starting your business easier and help you skip the learning curve.

1.  Figure out exactly what it is you want to do.  Do you want to sell a product? If so, what do you want to sell, clothes, organic food, books? Do you want to sell a physical product you have to keep in stock and ship or an electronic product, such as an ebook?  Do you want to sell a service, such as typing or building websites?  Check out my article, Online Business Suggestions for easy online business ideas.

2. Research, educate yourself, learn about the area of business you want to go into.  Learning how to build and promote your site properly will go a long ways as well.  The best resource for real hard-core detailed learning is an internet marketing course by internet marketing expert Corey Rudl. From what others have said about it, it doesn't just tell you what to do, but how to do it.  Learning from the best will save you a lot of time and money in the long run.  If interested in this course, click here.  Remember, the more knowledge and experience you have, the better you will do.

3. Start brain-storming for the best domain name for your business.  Your domain name should be fairly short if you want people to be able to remember it easily and a domain name with around one to three important keywords should help you as well.  Domain names go fast, the one you want could be unavailable tomarrow!  Keywords are important.  If you want good traffic you need popular keywords in the content of your site.  A good tool to find out how popular keywords are is wordtracker, just take the free trial.

4. Get everything you need for your business, merchandise, physical or electronic, online ordering system, whether you use a merchant account or a third party processor (recommended for beginners).  Make sure you can deliver your product or service without any problems.  Work on customer support, email follow-ups, etc.  For this you will find Corey Rudl's Mailoop 6.0 helpful for automating a number of tasks.  Automation is another key to a successful business, so you definitely want to include that.

5. You need to set up a good website.  This step will include a lot of step 4, since your site is where you'll set up your online ordering system and everything.  Again another excellent resource comes to mind, Ken Evoy's SiteBuildIt software.  This software will help you develope a good website and optimize it for the search engines and which is designed to sell.  It's also an incredible professional site promotion tool.  You get a year of hosting with it too.  Click here to learn more about it.

6. Now you must promote your site.  Again, if you want save yourself time and a whole lot of head aches, you should get Ken's SiteBuildIt! software.  This will include, first and foremost, submitting your site to all the major search engines.  There are a lot of services out there that will do this for you, some are free and some are not.  I advise against using any free services because they don't do it according to each engine's rules, some information that some engines or directories want may not be given, etc.  It's better to either do it yourself one engine at a time or get a service that will submit your site professionally.  You can also advertise your business in ezines.  See my Promoting Your Business Online for a little more on this subject.
